I recently had an invitation to go inside the large home built in 1807 at 166 State St. Portland Maine during a renovation phase inside the home.

The monastery was established by Sister Mary Genevieve (Bertha Rita Connell, d. 1974) with seven sisters in 1934. It is the home of the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood, a mission of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ. It is a cloistered contemplative order of nuns devoted to a life of prayer, founded in Quebec, Canada. The sisters support themselves by making and selling Mass cards and spiritual bouquets. Their beautiful, intimate chapel is open to the public during the day. From 1919 to 1934, the building was the site of King’s Academy, a school for girls and women taught by members of the Sisters of Mercy from St. Joseph’s Convent.

The building was built in 1807 for Chief Justice Prentiss Mellen (1764-1840). In 1846 James Deering became owner, residing for two years while he built a mansion behind Deering Oaks. He then transferred the title to his son-in-law William Pitt Fessenden (1806-1869), upon whose death Judge William L. Putnam, mayor of Portland, acquired the residence. These men and their families were very prominent Protestant Portlanders.

Bishop Louis S. Walsh purchased the home in 1918 and on January 6, 1919 he dedicated the building as girls school called King’s Academy. The Sisters of Mercy taught here until 1926, when the students were transferred to St. Joseph’s Academy in Deering.

In October 1934, Bishop Joseph E. McCarthy transferred ownership of the property to the Sister Adorers of the Precious Blood, a cloistered order of nuns, who continued to reside there.

It’s a three-story Greek Revival building built in 1807 as a private residence for Prentiss Mellen, a Massachusetts native who settled in Portland around 1806, became a U.S. senator for Massachusetts, and later became a chief justice of the Supreme Court of Maine when Maine achieved statehood.

Prentiss Mellen- Born 11/11/1764 Sterling Massachusetts, Died 12/31/1840 in Portland Maine.

The house was later the home of William Pitt Fessenden, a Maine legislator and U.S. senator who served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln.

Year’s later the building was sold to the Bishop of Portland and It then became home, for 84 years, to the Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood, a contemplative, Catholic religious order. The Monastery originally housed up to 14 sisters. But in recent years, the order declined to two sisters. Last fall, the two nuns moved to the Monastery of the Precious Blood in Manchester, N.H., where the order was founded.

Below is the Video of the night of January 3, 2020, at 166 State St. Portland Maine. This was the Investigation we did with just a Digital Recorder by asking questions. We received what we believe were Residual Evp’s and Intellectual Evp’s, nothing was seen out of the ordinary but we did hear a loud knock sound which we could not explain. We did receive some replies to questions asked and names as well.

Some are Intellectual and some are residual in my opinion. The recordings posted here are in no particular order. The video presented has the recordings in proper order. 166 State St. Portland Maine was a huge building which offered multiple rooms on quite a few floors to investigate.
